The Cincinnati Dockers Australian Rules Football Club fought two tough squads as well as intense heat en route to finishing second in the Cincinnati Dockers Invitational Tournament last Saturday, going 1-1 against the competition. Cincinnati defeated the Milwaukee Bombers by a score of 41-20, while falling to the Columbus Jackaroos 31-17.
Due to the extreme weather conditions, the tournament games were split into 4 10-minute quarters to allow for more water breaks. In the Dockers’ first match of the tournament, they played against the Columbus Jackaroos who had dispatched the Bombers earlier in the tournament. The Jackaroos started the game kicking well and accurate, not allowing the Dockers to get the ball into their end, and carried a 2-goal lead into the first quarter break.
For the next two quarters, the Dockers defense held firm, only allowing the Jackaroos to increase the lead to three goals. In the fourth quarter, the Dockers took action, kicking a goal right away and putting the Jackaroos defense on notice. The Dockers continued to pound away on offense, but were unable to kick accurately the rest of the quarter, while a late goal from Columbus sealed the deal for the Jackaroos, handing the Dockers a 31-17 loss.
Cincinnati had no time to lament their loss, as they then had to face the Milwaukee Bombers. The Dockers continued the positive momentum from the final quarter of their previous game into this game, and despite some new additions to the Bombers late in the game, the Dockers were able to impose their will and come out victorious by a score of 41-20, earning their second place spot in the tournament.
The Dockers’ next matches will take place on August 6th when they travel to Kansas City for a four-team tournament involving the Kansas City Power, the Dallas Magpies, and the Des Moines Roosters.
