The Cincinnati Dockers Australian Rules Football Club won all three of their matches in the blistering heat of Nashville, Tennessee to win the 2018 USAFL Division 2 Central Regional Championship.
The first match of the day saw the Dockers earn a convincing win over the Atlanta Kookaburras by a score of 69-18. Following a short one-hour break, the Dockers took the field again to challenge one of their fiercest rivals, the Des Moines Roosters. A strong offensive first half from Cincinnati, combined with a resilient defense in the second half, saw the Dockers come out winners by a score of 54-20.
Cincinnati then had two hours to rest and heal up as much as they could to prepare for their de facto Grand Final against their toughest challenge of the day in a very strong Oklahoma FC squad. On paper, the Dockers were underdogs, if only due to their depleted bench, compared to Oklahoma’s larger bench and fresher legs.
However, much like their match against Des Moines, the Dockers started out strong and accurate in the first half, kicking four goals to Oklahoma’s one. The second half saw Oklahoma attempt a fierce comeback, while the Dockers defense fought tooth-and-nail to protect their lead. In the end, their fight was rewarded with a 31-23 victory to secure the championship.
The Dockers will next take the field on August 18th, when they hit the road to face their regional foes, the Indianapolis Giants.
